Country bash benefits pet rescue group
Pets were invited to accompany their owners to the second annual One of a Kind BBQ and Country Hoedown on Saturday evening.Founder Lisa Holland-Toth said funds raised would be used by the pet rescue program to provide food, shelter and medical care for homeless animals.Susan Flowers chaired the event held at Our Lady of the Elms Athletic Field adjacent to Crown Point Ecology Center.Debbie Prinz and her dog Augie wore matching cowboy hats as they climbed aboard a hay wagon for a ride around the fields, accompanied by Mary Briggs, Ellen Otto, and Ed and Libby Upton and their dog Annie. Chris Flowers and Cole Loguidic brought their dogs, Shorty and Stella, from a dog dock-diving competition.Catered Elegance and Angie’s Rib Wagon served a Western style dinner of barbecued ribs, chicken, vegetarian lasagna and baked beans, and Mary Ann Spiros offered margaritas and lemonade.Sue Wilson and Scott Wynn of WQMX radio were masters of ceremonies of the event, while Redneck Inc. provided country music. Dawn Pokorny, director of the One of a Kind’s adoption center, introduced Bandit, Pace and Sally, three dogs awaiting new homes. The dogs sat obediently as she offered them samples of barbecue. “We instruct them to sit whenever we go in or out a door, making it easier for their new owners,” she said.Later, Lorie Ollom took Bandit for a run around the athletic track. Dr. Megan Geldhof said the group offers low cost spay and neuter programs. “We do more every year,” she said, as she played with a dog named Geo.Trainer Ron Shannon said he helps with special-needs dogs, as his own dog, Maxine, sat on his shoulders.Although they didn’t bring any cats to the event due to the heat, Joanie Farmer said there are lots of cats awaiting adoption at their new facility at 1929 W. Market St. John Lioces, Alison MacLaren, Tracy Corpus, Kristy Miller, Lynn Gorman and Kami Dixon looked over the silent auction items, and Pam Wojcik admired jewelry from Starborn Creations.Tim Prinz wore his dog, Napoleon, in a carrier as he enjoyed the party with George and Michelle Stoll, Brian and Georgette Thomas, Marilyn Kovacs, Joan Coleman, Michelle Gauken, Beverly Holland, Kat and Tim Pestian, Josh Mills and Moira Altella.
